'In a free enterprise, the community is not just another stakeholder in business; but is in fact the very purpose of its existence.'
- Mr. Jamsetji N. Tata
What is employer supported volunteering?
Businesses and the public sector are becoming increasingly interested in how their own employees can become involved in volunteering. Companies play an integral role in helping build stronger communities. Across the world, companies are integrating employee and community involvement initiatives into their business strategy. Many and varied programmes are being set up to assist employees to volunteer, whether during work hours or in their own time.
This is called employer supported volunteering (ESV).
Employer supported volunteering may complement and enhance other community investment programmes, such as charitable and community donations, payroll giving schemes, recycling office equipment etc.
What distinguishes ESV?
So what distinguishes employer supported volunteering from other forms of volunteering?
Employer supported volunteering is a three-way partnership between the employer, employee and the receiver of these volunteers (e.g. a community group, school, hospital, NGO or civil society organisation). For each party there are clear benefits in getting involved.
