About Apnalaya
They work with the slum settlements of Mumbai. Their area of intervention include health, education & citizenship and livelihood. The urban poor are deprived of basic human needs (food and water) and are devoid of civic amenities (sanitation, hygiene and electricity). They lack access to healthcare, education and livelihood opportunities. They struggle to survive under the constant threat of loss of livelihood and tenure. Apnalaya works towards ENABLING access to basic services, healthcare, education and livelihoods; EMPOWERING them to help themselves; and ENSURING provision of civic entitlements through engagement with government institutions and decision makers.
Project Background
Apnalaya seeks to mobilise general public based on their interest in understanding the urban poor in a structured manner towards: a) understanding citizenry and empathy b) relooking at the idea of volunteering.
Project Objectives
Volunteers through their specialised knowledge are able to simplify information from Legal, Budget, City Plan Documents for community members of Shivaji Nagar and Apnalaya teams on topics related to the Urban Poor in Mumbai
Skills and Experience Required
Students/Teachers in Humanities,Urban Planning eg Law, Economics Understanding of government & MCGM budget, City Development Plan & policies related to urban poor
What's in it for the volunteer?
They volunteer will learn about the non-glamorous and the other side og Mumbai. They will become aware of the daily life struggles of the hidden Mumbaikars who live in Govandi. He/she will develop a sense of empathy and get the satisfaction of using their knowledge to empower the low income group.
Time Commitment: Flexible; depends on the volunteer
